With the formal completion of the mega-merger between Jio and Star, the two sports broadcasting behemoths have begun operating as a unified entity. The first major indications of this integration will be seen next month during England’s tour of India for an eight-match white-ball series.

Cross-promotion of properties began some time ago, and starting next month, the properties will also be shared across platforms. The England series, a property of JioCinema, falls under this arrangement despite the fact that its parent company, Viacom18, bagged the exclusive media rights from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for Rs 5,963 crore last September for five years.

On Monday, Star announced that the eight matches scheduled between January 22 and February 12 will be broadcast live on Star Sports and Disney+ Hotstar. However, this does not rule out the original platforms – Sports18 and JioCinema- from streaming and broadcasting the games but it appears, though, that Star’s platforms will serve as the primary broadcasters. Star Sports confirmed this development through an official announcement on its social media platform.

However, sources within the integrated company indicated that while the series may also be available on the original platforms. Going forward the Champions Trophy, an ICC property bagged by Disney Star, could be available on JioCinema and Sports 18.

Star and Jio formally came together last month when Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) announced the merger. In a statement on November 14, it said, “RIL, Viacom 18 Media Private Limited (Viacom18) and The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) (Disney) today announced that following the approval by the Hon’ble NCLT Mumbai, Competition Commission of India and other regulatory authorities, the merger of the media and JioCinema businesses of Viacom18 into Star India Private Limited (SIPL) has become effective (the JV). In addition, RIL has invested Rs 11,500 crore (1.4 billion) into the JV for its growth. The JV has allotted shares to Viacom18 and RIL as consideration for the assets and cash, respectively.”

The transaction of the JV was worth INR 70.352 crore (USD 8.5 billion). At the closing of the transactions, the JV is controlled by RIL and owned 16.34 per cent by RIL, 46.82 per cent by Viacom18 and 36.84 per cent by Disney.

Star Sports has long been India’s leading sports channel, virtually holding all cricket properties — India’s home matches, ICC (World Cup) matches and the IPL. However, with the emergence of Sports18 and JioCinema in recent years, it faced competition, resulting in sharing the IPL and the loss of India’s home games which it conceded to the competitor. The ICC rights, though, stayed with it.

3 Fifties scored in fewer than 20 balls by Head in IPL – all three in 2024 – the joint most by any batter in the history of the competition alongside Jake Fraser-McGurk. The 16-ball 50 is the joint fastest for SRH in IPL alongside Abhishek Sharma’s 16-ball effort against MI earlier in the season, a game in which Head scored one off 18 balls and his own 16-ball half-century against DC in Delhi.

34 balls taken by Head and Abhishek is the fewest balls by any pair to a 100-run partnership in IPL, only behind the 30-ball effort by the same pair against DC in Delhi. 62 balls to spare are the most balls remaining in a chase of 100+ targets in IPL, surpassing DC’s 57-ball win against PBKS at Brabourne in 2022 chasing 116. Across all T20s, it is the earliest a team has overhauled a 150+ target surpassing Brisbane Heat’s chase of 157 against Melbourne Stars at the Gabba in the 2018/19 season.

3 IPL 2024 is the third instance of 1000+ sixes hit in a single edition of IPL following 1062 sixes in 2022 and 1124 in 2023 editions.
